Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has met with his counterparts from Argentina, Peru and Bolivia as part of China’s efforts to strengthen cooperation in Latin America in the context of its Belt and Road initiative. During his meeting with Argentine Foreign Minister Diana Mondino in Beijing, Wang stressed the importance of expanding cooperation in areas such as aerospace, maritime and bilateral trade to advance the international Belt and Road initiative. China expressed its support for Argentina’s efforts to maintain economic and financial stability in the midst of the current crisis, offering assistance within its capabilities.

Argentina’s economic dependence on China has increased considerably in recent years, with China being the third largest destination for its exports and representing around 20% of its imports. In this context, Mondino reaffirmed Argentina’s commitment to a friendly policy towards China and showed interest in fostering bilateral cooperation in various areas, encouraging Chinese companies to invest more in Argentina.

Wang also met with Bolivia’s foreign minister and Peru’s foreign minister, discussing cooperation in infrastructure development under the framework of the Belt and Road, as well as in the digital economy.

China is seeking to diversify its trading partners and investors amid prolonged tensions with the United States by expressing interest in Latin America, which has raised concerns in Joe Biden’s administration over China’s access to key natural resources and strategic points in the region.
