During the seventeenth edition of the ‘Con Maduro +’ program, Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro announced the commencement of negotiations with the province of Shenzhen to boost the development of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) between La Guaira and the Asian city. He highlighted Shenzhen’s significant annual exports, solidifying its position as China’s largest exporter, and emphasized the importance of engaging with the city’s three major companies to discuss the implementation of the SEZ.
Gabriela Jiménez, the government official responsible for projects in the SEZ, underscored collaboration as ‘an endless opportunity for cooperation, talent development, and complementarity’ between Venezuela and China. Maduro called for the involvement of universities and youth in the development of the SEZ, proposing it as the primary technological zone in the region. Furthermore, the announcement included the establishment of economic and commercial development offices in Shanghai, along with offices dedicated to engagement with Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). Maduro stressed the significance of readiness for investment agreements, a point echoed by PDVSA President Pedro Tellechea, especially in the state of Carabobo.
During his visit to Shanghai, Maduro emphasized the financial standing of the province and announced Venezuela’s participation in the November import fair. Entrepreneurs from Carabobo expressed their commitment to engage in the forthcoming agreements. Lastly, Maduro announced the establishment of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for food production in the states of Anzoátegui and Monagas, aiming to bolster production capacity through Chinese investment and technology. Instructions were given to prepare a work plan with the province of Shandong to attract Chinese investors.
