On Sunday, January 21, the 3rd South Summit was held in Uganda, Kampala, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Group of 77. At this summit, high-level representatives from nearly one hundred countries, including China and heads of UN agencies, met to advance South-South cooperation.

The aim of the Summit was to discuss proposals on the current global governance system, increase and improve forms of South-South cooperation, and deepen the global partnerships necessary for balanced and beneficial development for the entire region.

According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, developing countries must lead efforts to reform outdated international institutions and frameworks. More than 130 countries are members of the bloc – the largest grouping in the global South, representing 80% of the planet’s population – and their solidarity and partnership are essential to building a sustainable, peaceful and just world for all, he said.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, who received the rotating presidency of the group from Cuba, assured that he will use this position to promote an increase in the production of goods and services of the G77 + China countries, the expansion of their markets and the elimination of trade barriers, as well as stability and security will be a priority, according to Forbes.

The summit, according to Forbes magazine, was held at a time when, in the face of international crises such as the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip or Russia’s conflict in Ukraine, many countries of the global south are demanding a greater voice in international organizations.

Liu Guozhong, special representative of Chinese President Xi Jinping also attended this Summit, delivered a speech on the importance of South-South cooperation and reforming the global governance system.

“Independence is the defining political characteristic of the Global South, seeking strength through unity is the glorious tradition of the Global South, development and revitalization are the historic mission of the Global South, and equity and justice are the common proposals of the Global South,” Liu enumerated.

It is worth recalling the recent agenda of the People’s Republic of China around the Global South, evidenced within the diplomatic visits of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Yi to Egypt, Tunisia, Togo, Ivory Coast, Jamaica and Brazil, in order to strengthen these ties of cooperation that were raised as necessary during the Summit.
