Peru and China reactivate Economic and Technical Cooperation Commission

Peru and China reactivated the Joint Intergovernmental Commission for Economic and Technical Cooperation held between the two countries after nine years of inactivity.

The Joint Intergovernmental Commission for Economic and Technical Cooperation is a mechanism established between Peru and China to promote collaboration in various fields, including trade, science and technology, education, health and investment. The Commission provides a platform to review and promote the bilateral economic agenda between the two countries.

Peru expressed its interest in increasing access of its products to the Chinese market, while assessing the bilateral economic relationship and preparing for the next Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ meeting in Peru this coming November. 

The Joint Intergovernmental Commission is part of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, reflecting the high level of relations between Peru and China. China is the main recipient of Peruvian exports and the largest Asian investor in the South American country. The reactivation of this commission strengthens bilateral ties, especially considering that it had not met since 2015.

The virtual meeting was presided by the Peruvian Foreign Ministry, counting with the presence of the Peruvian Foreign Minister, Javier González-Olaechea, and the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Peter Camino, together with China’s International Trade Representative, Wang Shouwen. Topics such as trade facilitation, cooperation in science and technology, education, health and investment were discussed.

In the context of the Peruvian Foreign Minister’s official visit to China, the eighth meeting of the Commission marked a significant milestone in economic and technical collaboration between the two countries. Key areas for mutual development were addressed, further consolidating China’s position as Peru’s primary trading partner and the main Asian investor in the country. 

This meeting reflects the commitment of both nations to strengthening their bilateral relationship and promoting stronger and more mutually beneficial economic and technical cooperation.
