On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Uruguay and the People’s Republic of China, as well as the 37th anniversary of the Chamber of Commerce, an event was held where former President Julio María Sanguinetti and former Foreign Minister Enrique Iglesias delivered a talk on the historical importance of this event. They highlighted the significant growth of bilateral trade in recent years, as China has become Uruguay’s main trading partner for the past 11 years. This relationship has been further strengthened with the signing of a joint declaration in 2016, which established both countries as strategic partners. They also emphasized the stability, mutual respect, and the potential for economic and commercial growth in bilateral relations.
During the event, the Chinese Ambassador to Uruguay, Wang Gang, expressed satisfaction with the progress made by both countries and highlighted the exponential growth of bilateral trade, which reached a figure close to 7.5 billion dollars last year. The importance of China as the world’s second-largest economy and one of the most populous countries was also emphasized, leading to increased demand for Uruguayan products, particularly in the food and raw materials sectors.
