This week, a Venezuelan delegation traveled to the People’s Republic of China with the purpose of advancing the joint development of the Agri-food Special Economic Zone of the East (ZEEAO). The commission, led by the Minister for Productive Agriculture, Wilmar Castro Soteldo, also includes the governors of the Venezuelan states of Anzoátegui and Monagas, as well as 30 entrepreneurs from the agri-food sector.

During the visit, which will extend until April 28th, the delegation will hold a number of meetings with Chinese companies and institutions to present projects and establish strategic alliances in areas such as research and development in animal and plant genetics, biological inputs, technology, and the development of the agro-industrial sector. This initiative aims to boost agricultural production in Venezuela, diversify its economy, and strengthen its commercial ties with China.

Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro emphasized the importance of this cooperation, highlighting that the ZEEAO encompasses several Venezuelan states and will have links with the Chinese province of Shandong province, one of the country’s most important economic regions, known for its agricultural production and agricultural exports.

During Maduro’s state visit to China in 2023, a memorandum of understanding was signed to work on the development of special economic zones, focused on cooperation and modernization.

Furthermore, in order to strengthen relations between Venezuela and China, meetings have been held between representatives of Venezuela’s International Center for Productive Investments (CIIP) and the Institute of Higher Studies of Special Economic Zones of Shenzhen, with the aim of promoting diversified economic development in the country.

This effort to strengthen bilateral relations is also reflected at the regional level, as demonstrated by the twinning agreement between the Venezuelan state of Carabobo and the Chinese province of Shanghai. This agreement, endorsed by Presidents Nicolás Maduro and Xi Jinping, seeks to channel investments and promote mutual development in key sectors such as energy, oil, shipbuilding, and automotive industries.

These initiatives continue the process of strengthening trade and cooperation between Venezuela and China, with the aim of promoting economic and agricultural development in Venezuela and strengthening its integration into the global economy.
