Panama commemorates the 169th anniversary of the arrival of the Chinese community in Panama

The first people of Chinese descent arrived in Panama 169 years ago. Approximately 750 people from China emigrated to Panama to help build railroads. A monument was erected at the lookout point of the Las Americas Bridge to recognize the work and friendship between the two countries.

Panama and the People’s Republic of China have closely linked domestic interests. Both countries strive to make progress on specific issues such as foreign investment, tourism, logistics, financial and commercial sectors, etc. This led Panama’s Foreign Minister, Erika Mouynes, to announce on March 30, 2022 the agenda of her Asian tour, which began the week of April 4, 2022.

Panama seeks a trade agreement with China if TPA is not renegotiated with the US

The United States and Panama signed a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in 2007. Producer unions and associations have been demanding that negotiations be opened to address the extension of the elimination of some of the country’s sensitive products. The Minister of Agricultural Development, Augusto Valderrama, warned that “if the US does not accept, we would have to look for alternatives and that would be to export these products to other countries.” One of these alternatives would be to initiate a free trade agreement (FTA) with the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

Online summer camp strengthens relations between Panama and China

On January 6, the Confucius Institute at Universidad de Panama inaugurated the online summer camp to bring the 10 participating countries in Latin America and the Caribbean closer to traditional Chinese culture. Panama, Jamaica, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guyana, Peru, Mexico, Chile, and Ecuador participated in the event.
