The Government of Venezuela reiterated its commitment to the “One China” principle in a statement made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yvan Gil, through his profile on X, formerly known as Twitter. The stetemtne emphasizes that Venezuela adheres to the recognition that the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing all of China. This statement is based on the Joint Declaration of Heads of State signed in September 2023 and strengthens the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Venezuela’s position is set in the context of international relations and strategic agreements between the two countries. The statement reflects Venezuela’s emphasis on maintaining strong relations with China, adhering to diplomatic principles and strengthening bilateral cooperation in various fields. The statement also underscores Venezuela’s position against foreign interference in its internal affairs and rejects any action that threatens its territorial integrity.

The reaffirmation of the friendship between Venezuela and China, as well as the determined will of both nations to strengthen their relations and strategic agreements of mutual benefit, is highlighted not only by the official statement, but also by other significant advances in integration and cooperation. In November 2023, both countries signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening judicial cooperation in Venezuela, evidencing the relevance that China has in the diplomatic field for the country. Likewise, in the economic sphere, Venezuela has sought to consolidate relations with Chinese businessmen with a view to establishing an Economic Zone in the region. This was evidenced when the governor of the Venezuelan state of Carabobo, Rafael Lacava, visited Shanghai in november 2023 to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

The determination to deepen these ties, backed by concrete actions in the diplomatic and economic spheres, suggests the importance of China for Venezuela. This rapprochement not only reflects the importance for China, but also the search to diversify its international relations in search of opportunities and mutual collaborations.
