Costa Rica limits Huawei’s participation in 5G development

During his visit to Washington, Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves discussed cybersecurity and talked about how his country experienced a cyberattack in 2022, allegedly of Russian origin. He highlighted that Costa Rica received assistance from the United States and Spain to counter the effects of the attack. Chaves also announced that his country has prohibited telecommunications companies from contracting Chinese technology for the development of 5G, opening the door for private companies in the sector. This measure, supported by the United States, is designed to ensure a secure and reliable cyber environment in Costa Rica, despite the pressures received.

President Chaves emphasized the importance of ensuring security in the development of 5G technology and mentioned that Costa Rica is considering American and European companies as reliable providers. This decision represents a significant step in cooperation with the United States to ensure cybersecurity and limit Chinese influence in the development of telecommunications infrastructure in Latin America.
